Instagram's latest features: IGTV, Music Stickers and more...

Instagram has come a long way since its launch in 2010. From the very start Instagram was set to be a success story with its video and image-based format.

Just 2 months after its launch the network had 1 million users and now, 8 years down the line, its monthly active users have grown to over 1 billion.

Continuously improving itself is something that Instagram has always done and its newer features aim to offer users even more than they have before, making Instagram a one-stop shop for everything. Let's go through the latest features:

IGTV

IGTV is Instagram’s new feature (and standalone app) that lets you watch full-screen, hour-long videos created by accounts you follow. Built for how you actually use your phone, the videos play in a full screen, vertical format and are no longer limited to 60 seconds.

IGTV can be accessed in two ways, either through the IGTV app or within Instagram - just look for the IGTV symbol next to the DMs (Direct Messages).

Working on an autoplay basis, the videos start playing as soon as you open the app. When you open the app, videos from people you already follow and others you might like (based on your interests) appear. A simple swipe up allows you to discover more from the following categories ‘For You’, ‘Following’, ‘Popular’ and ‘Continue Watching’. You can also like, comment and send videos to friends in DMs.

Within the app, creators (users) are called channels, when you follow a creator on Instagram, their IGTV channel will appear for you to watch. Anyone can become a creator on IGTV - simply upload a video in the app or on the web to start your channel.

Music Stickers

Launched last month, Instagram’s music stickers allow you to add music to your stories. These audible stickers permit users to choose a song from a database which can then be played within a story.

But what are stories? Stories are photos and videos which appear at the top of the Instagram display and disappear after 24 hours. The music stickers plays the song within your story and displays a credit to the artists and song.

Songs within the database appear in the following categories ‘Popular’, ‘Mood’, ‘Genres’ and you can even search for a song manually using the ‘Search Music’ feature.

Questions

Instagram's latest feature for stories, Questions, allows users to be asked questions by their followers or other users. The Question sticker overlays onto a story and when your followers see it, they can tap on it to reply.

You can see privately who asked you a question and what they asked you. To reply to a question, you share the response as another story where the question appears but the identity of the user who asked you it remains hidden.

What’s next?

So, with all these exciting new features coming out, what’s next?

Well, Instagram are currently testing a new way for users to verify their accounts. Designed to add more transparency and to protect users from scammers, Instagram is experimenting with an in-app form that lets users request verification.

After a Motherboard investigation was launched into SIM Hacking, Instagram revealed that they’re also working on a two-factor authentication solution that doesn’t require a user’s phone number. Working like other social media platforms, the new authentication option will allow users to authenticate their account with code-generating apps such as Google Authenticator and Authy.
